Supergiant Binary Stars - Video from Workshop

Citizen Sky is now officially permanent part of the AAVSO. In the coming weeks we will be moving additional content to the AAVSO site and freezing this site as an archive of the 1st three years of the project. Please visit the new landing page for future updates.

Below is a video from the workshop about supergiant binary stars by Dr. Doug Welch. We are in the process of posting the other video online. However, we are able to post this one quickly because it is a shorter talk than most of the others so has a smaller file size. This is an entertaining talk about supergiants, why we are interested in them and how certain properties can be used to uncover deeper understanding of the star. This talk is aimed at the level of an experienced amateur astronomer, but doesn't require knowledge of advanced astrophysics. It is a good starting point for those interested in doing some analysis later on in the Citizen Sky project. More video will be posted soon.

This is a 40MB Quick Time movie so may take a while to download. A Flash version will be posted with the other video, along with the PPT slides. A two-DVD set of all the videos has been mastered and is being copied right now. The video on the DVD will be of much higher resolution and quality.

Click the box to start the animation. Use the control bar beneath the animation to manually move it forward and backward.

Dr. Welch's PowerPoint file used in the presentation can be downloaded here.

Aaron, I went to the site to download the video, but I don't seem to be able to do it because my computer has blocked it, I think. Not being very computer savvy, I'm wondering if you could send me the DVD, when it's finished or tell me how to get to the video to download it. Thanks. Joan Chamberlin

Hi, Joan. It's funny your computer says the site is blocked because it is being hosted on the same server as Citizen Sky. It could be that you need the Quick Time plugin. We will post info on how to get the DVD when the rest of the videos are posted. We hope that happens before the end of this week.

Chris, I have XP also, but I don't even get a box to download. Something says, "Some plugins required by this page have been blocked for your protection."Joan

Joan and Aaron,I even downloaded Quicktime 7 and all I get is a voice even after several minutes of download time. A message pops up that says"Quicktime is missing software required to perform this operation. Unfortuantely, it is not available on Quicktime server"So, what do I do to get the video feed to work?Chris Stephan

Those who can't see QuickTime video may be able to watch Flash video (which is what YouTube uses). By the end of the week we're going to have the rest of the video posted on a web page. We will try to post embedded Flash versions along with the QuickTime versions. We have the Flash files created, but we may need our webmaster's help getting the embedded player to work on the CS web site. Since we run Drupal here, it's not strictly HTML. If so, then the Flash versions will have to wait until next week. Stay tuned.
