Initial pages for the Tutorial

Hello dear friends,Here are the initial pages for our tutorial, depicting Alpha Orionis as our tutorial star.Formats available for Open Office and MS Word.Notes: - Compared with the original "10 Stars Tutorial", frontpage is not included. That would show the Team's presentation or whatever information is required to introduce the project.- Page 2, point 7: note the "#". That's meant for the page number describing the observation procedure. I leave that open in the case that there are changes in the pages order. Please add your comments unders this thread :)Clear skies!

Initial pages tutorial

Dear Julio and All Southern Gems Teammates, Julio, you did a wonderful job! I'm so glad we got permission to use the map too. I could only find two little picky editing things to fix. On the page "Using a Star Chart" on #2 add an s to constellation. On the page "Measure a Star's Brightness" the word according needs two c's: according That's it. After fixing the things Sebastian mentioned and these two little things, the pages look finished to me. Anyone else notice anything needing change or clarification? If so, let us know right away. Thank you for your great work, Julio! Other teammates, did you know that Julio is coming to Boston on Wednesday and that I am getting to meet him in person on Thursday!!!!!! I'm very excited whenever I get to meet one of my Southern Gems friends. I'll make sure we get a picture taken so you can see us together. Maybe some of you other people on the team will meet and put a picture on her too! :-) Best Wishes to All of you, Joan <!--Session data-->

Minor suggestions

Hi Julio Yes, thanks for your work. Further to Joan and Sebastian's comments I have some minor suggestions/corrections (page 1):

  1. The reference to "...dominates high overhead this time of the year..." should probably be qualified since the document doesn't seem to refer to the time of year anywhere else.
  2. The comment "...his left shoulder (for those of us in the northern hemisphere)..." seems out of place in a document aimed at southern hemisphere observers.
  3. "Observations by the observers of the AAVSO..." =>"Observations in the AAVSO International Database..."
  4. "This is a light curve..." =>"This is a light curve..."

Keep up the good work and enjoy meeting up with Joan. Regards, David

Tutorial comments

Hi, Julio,

thanks for all your work on the tutorial!

Some comments below. When you mention Betelgeuse, don't include the Harvard Designation (0549+07) since he AAVSO has got rid of this old nomenclature system.

Greek letters in star names should be lowercase, in this example, alpha Orionis. When you describe Orion, what does it mean "his club"? "Its magnitude may drop below 1.2" instead of "the magnitude"

"super-giant" should be supergiant.

In the chart for "using a variable star chart", Bellatrix is 16 instead of 17 but I wouldn't use it because you are already giving Alnilam as 17 and since this has to be an easy example, it's better that brightness differences are large. Or you could use Bellatrix (16) and get rid of Alnilam. In measure a star's brightness, "assign them a number acording to the brightness" ="according to their brightness". I think that's it. Best wishes,

Sebastian.

Files corrected

Hello dear friends, I made the corrections as suggested. :) Sebastian: "club" is in English as "garrote" or "maza" is for us in Spanish :) On another topic: I will try to broadcast the talk I will perform in Cambridge this coming Thursday. If it is possible, please take a look at this link: "Astronomy in a small nation" It will start around the 20:00 hours, Cambridge local time (00:00 GMT/UTC). If no broadcast is available within 15 minutes past the hour, broadcast failed. Clear skies for all of you! :)
